More about this scene

This ancient public house stands on the edge of level salt marshes that run for miles along this part of the coast, which is known for wildfowl and other bird life. The village was once a seaport, and is scattered over a large area. It is hard to believe that it was once alive with dock workers, tradesmen and sailors. When the fens were reclaimed in the 17th century, the main sea channel became too shallow for boats to come in. The pub and other cottages have marks on their sides to indicate the height of the sea water which has flooded the area on several occasions.
