More about this scene

Once the railway arrived in 1885, the manorial village of Scalby grew into a genteel Victorian suburb of Scarborough. Still part of the Duchy of Lancaster (the Queen's Estate), preservation here is a byword. The bank building was once the Sir Christopher Keld Hospital Almshouses from 1647 to 1909, and it was rebuilt in 1854. It is now a private house. Scalby Stores beyond remains, and next door is Holt House. Scalby Holt, the magnificent large house at the end, was built in 1882 for Thomas Cooke, the noted telescope maker. Yew Court, behind the tree (left), was reconstructed in 1742 on the site of a monastic foundation. Former residents of the village include the Rowntree family and the Spencers of M & S fame.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I lived in 18 High Street from 1960 until 1969. I am interested in this photo because I think the lady pushing the push chair is my wife, Eva Rivis. I also lived at Ivy Dene North Street, from when I was 11 years old, until I was married at 19.
