This is the private footbridge to the island at Thames Ditton.
There was once a pub in this area which was called the Ball which may be where the name Ball o' Ditton comes from.
Any early farmstead close to the coast would have been an easy target for raiders and so probably needed defensive ditches - 'Ditton' means a farmstead with a ditch or dyke nearby.
The village grew up firstly when Thames Ditton's commons were enclosed in 1838, and then when the railway arrived in 1885.
The best part of Thames Ditton architecturally is north and west of this viewpoint, which shows the post office at the High Street's junction with Ashley Road.
Cricket too arrived in the 19th century - the first recorded match played by Twickenham Cricket Club was on July 29th 1833 against Thames Ditton - but it was in the next century that the world
