The shop under the blind (left) is no longer a shop, but the white house (centre) is still there. We may be glad that the ugly power line post has also gone.
Balcombe House, once called Parsonage House, is a large Tudor-style house of 1856. The 13th-century White House was run by the White Friars as a hostelry for Canterbury pilgrims.
The Tudor-style building at the end was constructed in 1940, and above that on the magnificent Chevin is the White House, a former barn, later used as refreshment rooms for the Victorian perambulators.
Opposite, however, the scene is intact, including the front wall of the White House (right), the gable-end of the Lodge, and at a dental surgery behind.
Built on the site of the White House in Park Square, it was originally called the Edward VII School; it was renamed the Technical School in 1938.
