Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

Selby Girls High School

A Memory of Selby.

Boys entered the school in 1968, about 12 in the sixth form and a normal intake in the first year(now year 7). The female staff and female pupils were in a state of shock, the boys were so noisy and undisciplined in comparison to the girls. At about this time the Queen visited the Selby to distribute the Maundy Money and the school was used as a reception area (1969?). The boys couldn't use the only boys toilets for several days as security measures had been installed in the toilets for the storage of some Henry Moore exhibits. I wrote a very sarcastic piece for the school mag about the whole visit and its preparations.

I think I may have gone to school with your sister Kathryn , who at the time was a keen bellringer. I also recall that the loo that was prepared for her majesty at our school was not used during her visit!! I have just watched the programme about the queen 's 90th birthday and it reminded me about her visit to selby all those years ago. I no longer visit as my parents are now gone, but I have happy memories of living in Brayton and the friends I made there. The youth club was a regular Friday event,run by Mr.Carr who was a p.e.teacher at the grammar. I used to have a Saturday job at weatherells store - is that still there?

I think Kathryn was a distant cousin, her dad was my dads first cousin and I think they lived up Leeds road. My own sister Margaret was also at the High school in the year below, and used to go bell ringing. I used to go to Brayton youth club for a short time, but we moved to Pontefract and had to travel in by bus for the last two years at the High school so didn't have any social life after that. Selby town centre continues to limp along and sometimes shows signs of renewal, there is a lot of house building going on in all the villages and recently we started and u3a which is thriving.
