Memories Of Smallfield

A Memory of Smallfield.

From the other side of the world I came across this memory page of Smallfield. I worked at Smallfield Hospital 1966/67 attached to the nurses dining room. Loved working there and the people I met. Unfortunately, I have lost contact with all of them as time moves on. I lived on site and I remember my bedroom window looked out over the fields towards Gatwick Airport. And this bedroom was centrally heated with radiators too!! A luxury for us colonials at the time.I used to shop in Horley where I remember there was a shop selling fabrics. As I sew, I returned to my home country with yards of material to keep me busy. I also 'faintly' remember visiting the local pub a few times and sitting in lounge chairs sipping away. And I can also remember my car (a mini) being serviced by the local Smallfield garage. The mention of gypsies encouraged me to write this as I saw them too and they were such a novelty. The mini car was garaged in one of those military corrugated iron type garages which I dare say have long gone. I was told at the time that the Canadians had built the hospital at the time of the second world war.

Comments & Feedback

I am looking for information on Smallfield Plough road in 1930-1940 as my mother was born then
Hi Eris, or bagreedy I was born in Smallfield in 1931 maybe I knew your Mum, I left there in 1954
Dear Eris, I was a patient in Smallfield Hospital in 1947 as a 17-year-old Cadet in the Indian Army. Have never been back to Smallfield but yours is the only comment I have found from somebody who worked there, albeit some time later. It was still a Canadian hospital in 1947. Best wishes, John Barnes
Hi Eris,
I did part of my nurse training at Smallfield Hospital and the rest at the Redhill General Hospital. I remember starting in the PTS-Preleminary Traning School on Monday 12th January 1970 at aged 19 coming from Mauritius. It was in the peak of winter and coming from the tropics I felt the intense cold and it did really bite! I lived in the first block of the nurses home from the main entrance of the hospital. I have been trying to track down people I trained with but to no avail. Hope my little trip down memoty lane jogs some memories. Regards, Nick Raghoo.
