A Memory of Sonning Common.

Not sure if it is an error, but 'Brinnds Corner' is spelt 'B-R-I-N-D-S C-O-R-N-E-R' after the butchers shop, (now an off-licence), on the corner of Peppard Road/Wood Lane and Brinds Close which was at the rear of the premises.

I used to live in Sonning Common from the late 1970's to mid 1990's with my late mother and sister in Widmore Lane, in one of the semi-detached houses, before reaching Widmore Pond and the 'Butchers Arms' pub. My late grandparents, [mum's parents] lived in one of the bungalows along the Peppard Road, almost opposite the crossroads/junction and spelt as I have highlighted in upper-case [minus the dashes] and on the local bus timetable. I used to ride my skateboards down Widmore Lane in my teens.

My late grandfather, several years before he passed away, started to compile a family tree. He found out via a friend in the village, was the strange fact or coincidence that he was related to the wife of Fred Richens, who wrote the book or part-work 'The Village That Never Was'. I think she was a second-cousin or other distant relative.

I usually drive through Sonning Common from Lower Earley, when I visit my sister in Didcot, as the Reading/Caversham traffic can be busy and/or horrendous at the best of times and join the Woodcote Road at Cane End.

BTW... if anyone reading this knows of where I can obtain a copy of 'The Village That Never Was' whether printed or .PDF, I would be most grateful.
