Memories Of Mardyke School

A Memory of South Ockendon.

Reading the memories of Dennis Reed and my brother Terry prompted me to share what I can remember about Ockendon and in particular Mardyke School. I went to Benyon School at aged 5 years in 1952 when Mardyke was being built. I switched to Mardyke later in that year OR early 1953. I have photos of my brother and myself outside the school in those early years circa 1955 when Terry (Terence) started there in 1954. It was good to hear from Dennis in these columns as he and his dad Jimmy were great friends of ours and I later worked with Jimmy on London Transport. I also remember that Mr West was my class tutor, but others teachers names escape me. I do remember one female pupil in my class Christine Birch, who was an early friend, but very few others. I recall more about my later days at Culverhouse School from 1958 and my English teacher Mr John Walsham, who was a brilliant man, and later to have a headship at Aveley School. If anyone has knowledge of Mr Walsham now I would appreciate it. Being an Ockendon boy from Orchard Road, where both of my parents lived and remained until their dying days, is very important to me. It remained so, throughout my working years, where locally I was employed on London Transport and then Essex Police right up to my last retirement in 2006 after spells teaching myself at The Grays School and Grays Police Station front Office. I would welcome any feedback from anyone related to my comments, especially you Dennis.

Hi Laurie. I visit the Francis Frith site from time to time. I was born in South Ockendon and remember many of the scribes here. I actually remember your brother Terry. Whilst older than me and my pals, l got to know him through a mate of mine. He was Roy Hudson who also lived in Orchard Road. I can't remember which number but the house was near the waste ground before the prefabs. I too have many happy memories of Ockendon and enjoy reading the nostalgia.
All the best.
Geoff Hunter.
Hi I am sue brooker, I married Barry savage and we both knew Terry. Barry went to culver house and I went to lennards. I think Terry played football with Joe sans om, Johnny Joyce, and others. I lived anton road, Barry in dene path.
Hi, I knew your brother Terry very well. He was great friends with my husband, John Redgrave and best friend Gordon Sinclair. Don't know if the names ring a bell. But we all went everywhere together, and always in the Royal Oak in the village. I remember Terry was a very nice man and can still see his face after all these years (can't always remember faces now at my age). Lovely memories.
Hi Laurie, I was born in 1947 and also started at the Village School (Benyons?) then Mardyke. I lived in Foxglove Crescent, and used to play football and cricket on the 'waste ground' (which we used to refer to as the 'Green') referred to by Geoff Hunter. Names I remember from those days whom you may know include Colin Williams, Peter Nicholls and the Luck twins (Peter and Stewart). Regards, Alan Ellis

Hi Laurie, I was born in 1947 in Southend and moved to South Ockendon in 1953. I lived in Daiglen Drive (No 144) Our Football Pitch was on Bonnygate Woods which sat between Daiglen Drive and Annifer Way (where I live now) We used to play Anton Rovers on a regular basis. We formed Belhus Bombers and entered the Thurrock and District league. I have a very good memory of past footballing friends and foes. I remember you and Terry playing at Ockendon Courts. Sorry Lol, but Terry was always just a step ahead of you, on the pitch. We later met at Jurgens, where you played on a Wednesday afternoon for Grays Police. Wally Whitehill still plays bowls with our club at Aveley Rec. Are you still an avid baggie supporter ? Hopefully Laurie we will chat again and share lots more memories. Regards Reg Ings
