More about this scene

The old Town Hall, a square building with Tuscan columns completed in 1768, was replaced in 1903 by new municipal buildings designed by E E Fetch. Around the Market Place at this time were a large number of pubs used by the town's seafarers (South Shields had the largest number of seamen as a proportion of its population than anywhere else in Britain) whilst waiting for time to go over to Mill Dam and pay off.

My granda was Arthur he owned a tailor/pawn shop in Frederick Street in South Shields - he once lived at 66 Hartington Terrace in South Shields - I used to be taken there every Sunday to visit - he died in 1959 My family tree has gaps about him 2 of his children were Herbert and Hilda I’ve hit a brick wall about my family and was looking for more info. Leather Needle Holder Advertising Moncrieff &Beck Jewelers Ctr
I just went to an estate auction in muncie, indiana, USA... I purchased what I believe is a needle holder, leather, with gold writing. It says: Moncrieff &Beck Jewellers Ctr 14KingStreet South Shields Does anyone know about this business? Do I have the right time period? We're they prominent Jewelers?

Summer Holidays
My dad worked at the middle docks just about 1956 and in them days the shipyards would have their fortnight summer holidays all at once. My dad would wake me up at 6am to get ready, have my toast and jam,then it was off to the little beach to get our deck chairs and tent for changing into our trunks. Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
