The village of St Boswells borders the main road from Jedburgh to Edinburgh. The 5th Duke of Buccleuch was just a boy when inherited his title in 1819. He lived at Dalkeith, but also had a lodge at Eildon near Melrose. The kennels for his hunt were built in 1836 on land close by the village green. He improved and enlarged them in 1843. In the hunting season as many as 350 huntsmen, horses and grooms would assemble at the kennels. Each huntsman brought two horses, riding one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. When hunting was banned in the 1990s the hounds were moved to Greenwells, near Eildon Hall.
