Family History In Stanford Le Hope

A Memory of Stanford-le-Hope.

I was born in Stanford in 1961. My family had lived there for many generations. My great grandmothers 1st married name was Nellie Barker and her husband died after the First World War due to the gases he had inhaled during the war. Her daughter Edith ( Edie) was my grandmother and married Ted Harriss. They lived in the houses in The Sand pit. My mum is Jeanette Harriss. Ted and Edie went on to run the Off Licence in Southend Road.
I loved living in Stanford as a child and remember going to Stanford Infant and Juniors where Mr Jones was the head. I Then went to Hassenbrook until 1977.
Remember walking miles in the school holidays to Horndon, Fobbing, Coalhouse Fort and down The Warren.
Happy days
Karen (was Yallop)

Hi Karen, I was also born in Stanford, down Poley Road. It was my grandparents house, Albert and Olive Mercer (new Gowers). My nan worked in the laundry opposite and my dad worked for Mobil, then Shell. My great grandparents lived down Rectory Road, in Daisy Villas. I also went to Stanford Infants and Juniors, I remember Mr Jones he was a very nice man and I went to Hassenbrook too.

I have been researching my family history and found that my g-grandfather Harry Gowers, was a fireman and wonder if you had heard of a fire station in Stanford.

Stanford was a wonderful place to grow up in back then.

Great memories and definitely happy days
Sue Cole (nee Mercer)
