More about this scene

Seen from the east across the garden's ornamental pond is the huge façade of Stonyhurst. Begun in 1523 by Hugh Shireburn, it remained the staunchly Catholic family's home until the 18th century, when it passed to the Jesuit order who founded a school here. The priests have since extended the building and added the great church, seen on the left.
