Nostalgic memories of Streatham's local history

Share your own memories of Streatham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

As a boy I was shipped off in the summer holidays from the family farm in Kent to stay with Grandparents at 15 Ellison Road. I soon developed a fascination for the trains and would spend most days on the station courtesy of a penny platform ticket. Fifty or so years later I am modelling the station, and as I have a fair bit of space to play with I am able to reproduce Greyhound Lane and Streatham Vale ...see more
I worked in the Moo Cow milk bar in the 60s opposite the theatre, we had a lot of the actors come in during the interval, I recall Alma Cogan and Alfred Marks among many, very happy days working there.
Oh, what memories came back when reading other people's; I was one of five children that went to Emmanual School. I have 3 brothers and one sister, we attended there between 1953 - 1964; there was Megan, Dennis, Noma, Trevor, Edmund, our surname is Gill (I married a McGill). When I look back I am sure we were looked at as the poor family but we were happy. We lived in Colmer Road, the Norbury End of Streatham. We use to ...see more
I can remember Catherine, and Didier. Our teacher Mrs Mazaud. I had been placed in a family the father used to sell ice cream . I danced at the royal lion's club at the bali hai club, we also went to an ice skating club where I fell badly. We visited candem town . If we have common memories let me know.
I was brought up in the flats on the main road of Aldrington Road next to Wates furniture shop. I went to Eardley Road then in 1960 went to Dunraven. I remember very well the sweet shop on the corner; the smell was heavenly. I had a friend called Anne who's family lived in one of the first houses in Leverson Street. Then in 1963/4, Eardley Road had a youth club what me and me mates went to. I met a really nice guy there Manny or Les was his name, such good times.
Me and me mate Sylvia used to go skating, then go change, then go back to the Bali Hi. I have to admit that we did look older - we were allmost 15 - boy we had some fun and made new friends.
Wow that brings back memories, esp when I was on my way home from Dunraven School. I used to go in and just look, as it was a bit out of my price range back then. I haven't been back to Leigham Court Road since 1970 when I was first married and had a flat in Drewstead Road, such memories - sigh.
We lived in Sternhold Avenue, No 87 I think, and I went to Sunnyhill Road School until we moved to Crystal Palace some two years later. I remember the bombed out old Streatham Theatre and a milk bar call the Blue Riband which was opposite, I think. I always went every Saturday to the ABC cinema. I was there when the last of the trams ran along the High Street and for some years kept the ticket that was ...see more
Feeling old and thought back to my years in Streatham and my first love Jean Moore. She lived in Natal Road, I believe she got married in 68/69. Would love to say 'hi', if you see this Jean. I think she moved to Tooting; if anyone can help I would be grateful. My email is odo49odo@hotmail.com
Hi, I own a black four door 1937 Austin Big Seven motor car. It was first purchased from Platers in Streatham.. Has any one an old photo of the garage/showroom? Or, do you know of the car, registration number; EXY 437. I have information of it after 1976, but where was it before that? I feel sure someone local must have bought it new, or know something of it! It would be great to find out the missing ...see more
