More about this scene

In days gone by there was a gate across the road at this point which barred the way to passers-by, who could only proceed on payment of a toll. These payments were collected at the toll, or pyke, house, the octagonal, Gothic-style building pictured here. Above the doorway is the list of 'Tolls authorised to be taken at this gate. For any drove of oxen, cows...one halfpenny.'

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My ancestor Henry Fisher lived here according to the 1881 census with his wife Amelia and their 10 children! He was a maltster, so I will have to research breweries.
