Nostalgic memories of Sutton's local history

Share your own memories of Sutton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Sutton Station holds some great memories from the 60's, including childhood summer holidays. Before we had a car I remember catching the express 'corridor train' to the south coast...so exciting! I live in Toronto now, but I still shop with mum in Sutton High Street every time I visit. Mum is 85 now, and she had great times as a student at Sutton Art School during the war. She has vivid ...see more
My father owned the fish shop at Stonecot Hill and I remember going and answering the old phone that had an operator. Also I put the sawdust on the floor at night and wrapped up the fish in newspaper for customers. I do not have any photos of the shop, or the one at North Cheam, and grandfather's shop at Merton. Does anyone have photos? Or of Billingsgate as I went there in the 50's. The name of the family was, Blunt. Gill Ward
We lived in a block of flats, Weihurst Court, Carshalton Rd. This was at the top of Ringstead Road, where the trolley buses came up this steep hill. As a child it was fun to watch when the arms of the trolley came off the wire and the driver had to get off and sort it out with a long pole. I attended a prep school, St. Norberts, in Carshalton Beeches. The uniform was blue and grey and the colour of the ...see more
Many happy years in Sutton, especially in Sutton swimming baths, when my dad used to cycle with me on the crossbar of his bike, from Beauchamp Rd. He taught me to swim when I was about 8, that's when they had diving boards. The days before 'health n safety'. The pool attendant was a bloke who wore a white jacket, and always wore wellies. If he spotted us boys near the girls cubicles "seperate sides for boys " he would ...see more
This is a shot of Stonecot Hill, looking south towards North Cheam. The shop you can see is on the corner of Stonecot Hill and Ash Road - it was an off-licence. Before 1964 it had a brown facia, with the Whitbread logo and was called 'The Empire Wine Stores'. After 1964 (when this shot was taken) the facia was changed to white/blue and carried the Stowells logo. Later still it was changed to red/white/black ...see more
St.Barnabas Youth Club I also have happy memories of the Youth Club and was one of the founder members. I remember with particular fondness Rev Clark. Our first club meetings were with him in the old vicaarage in Lower Street(?). My parents met and married in St.Barnabas. my mother having dropped her glove coveniently after Evensong for dad to pick up (this was in about 1921). I myself met and married my ...see more
Yes I remember the army depot on the A217. As a young boy I had friends that lived in Stayton Road, almost opposite the army depot. We often used to watch the soldiers practising marching - there was always a bugle being played and they were always there of a Sunday. We used to hear them from were we lived in Dibdin Road. As a Sutton boy I have very fond memories of Sutton. I also remember the Street party ...see more
I would like to thank those who have responded to this and I have equally replied. Sutton has fond memories. The girl I married is still my partner and we often speak fondly of Sutton and what it used to be like. We are very interested in hearing the stories of what it is like now. Is the tree still outside what used to be called 'Trueforms shoe shop'? Do they still have the little market in West Street? Can you drive up the ...see more
I went to Sutton East Secondary Modern School, Throwley Road, and spent some happy years there and made many friends. I am trying to locate any of them, and anyone who went to the youth club. I have so many fond memories of school days and Sutton, we had moved around a lot, and I would love anyone to contact me. I remember visits to the two cinemas, shopping in Ghinns, and working at Dolton, Bourne & ...see more
So many good memories of Elm Grove. My paternal grandmother was Lillian Chard and lived at number 39 Elm Grove. As a family we also lived in Elm Grove when my parents were first married. Although I was born in St. Heliers, my sister, Rosalind was born at home. I remember Mr. and Mrs. Whiffen but also in Elm Grove was Charlie and Rennie Clark, Mrs. Egg (Egleton?) next door to my grandmother. I remember playing on the ...see more
