More about this scene

One famous 18th century villager was Nicholas Sanderson. As a child Nicholas contracted smallpox which left him blind, yet he learnt to read by passing his fingers over gravestones in the churchyard. His retentive memory must have been outstanding; he learnt Latin and Greek and became a specialist at algebra. He later became professor of mathematics at Cambridge.
