More about this scene

The 'Red Castle' has been the setting for a number of films over the years. The present building dates from 1870, and was designed in the romantic style by William Burges for John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, the third Marquess of Bute. The site has seen two previous strongholds - one a motte and bailey built by the Normans in the course of their early campaigns in the area, and the second a more substantial construction built by the de Clare clan, which lasted a couple of hundred years before being abandoned.
