The foundation stone is dated 5 September 1789; this building replaced earlier churches on the site. St Mark's Chapel, on the right, was added in 1904, sixteen years after the Parish Church was elevated to a Cathedral. The first Bishop in 1888 was William Walshaw How, a famous composer of hymns; his best-known hymn is 'For all the saints who from their labours rest'.
