These solid stone cottages, and the George Inn on the left, exhibit the robust and simple style which is common to most British fishing ports. Certainly the men of Walmer, who have manned the lifeboat stationed here since 1856, have good cause to regard the sea and weather with caution. They have left the security of these snug buildings in treacherous conditions to save more than eighteen hundred souls whose vessels have come to grief on the nearby Goodwin Sands over the intervening years.

My ancestor's nephews Henry and George Wraight aged 35 and 25 were brewers labourers most likely at Thompsons Brewery which was situated to the left of this photo where you can just see the Bell on a sign, this is an indication of their outlet the Bell public house which has survived to this day.
