Childhood In Elmsleigh Road

A Memory of Wandsworth.

I lived at number 42 Elmsleigh Road from 1947 until about 1963.My pals and I played in the street in safety as there were few cars. We played "tin can tommy" and "cannon" otherwise we were on Wandsworth Common climbing trees or up at the "dogs pond". I remember well the frying pan and the bombed houses in the street. Dangerous places but great places to play !! My pals were Brian Winston, Marshal Hooper, Mary Birch, colin Williams and Beryl Thumbwood. I went to school at Eltringham Street and later to Wandsworth Grammar. Here my friends were Raymond Whittacker and raich Butler. From my Primary school my best pal was Krishna Warren. We made trollies with ball bearing racers and got up to a great speed down the hill - what wonderful days. Mrs Pearson had a sweet shop at the top of the road (turn left) and I recall sweets being on ration. I can picture the "toffee apple" man who came round with his adapted bike weekly and the fish man who also came round weekly. There was a fish and chip shop at the top of the road and a pile of newspaper could be exchanged for a bag of chips. The "French Horn"pub was at the top of the road. I used to walk to Chelsea for football from the age of fifteen. Well its all under the underpass now but the memories are clear. Love to hear from anyone who identifies with my recollections.
