The Wells whelkers are renowned along this coast for their persistence in pursuing their trade. Whelking was not always a comfortable affair. Dropping pots from open clinker-built boats in pitch darkness and foul weather meant the whelkers could often find themselves stranded for hours on end on the wrong side of the bar waiting for the tide.
