Neighbours

A Memory of West Hendon.

I grew up in a time when people seldom moved home. This built up such a rapport with all the neighbours we had in Milton Road, not always friendly of course. There were ructions sometimes if us kids upset anyone by kicking balls against walls, playing knock down ginger, etc but if any help was needed it was always there. As my older brothers married and moved out of the family home, they didn't go far. Fred, the eldest, lived opposite, Bob (locally named Basher) was a couple of doors further down and Jack stayed even nearer as he took over the ground floor of number 46 with his wife Audrey nee Poole whose family came from Stanley Road, leaving my sister Topsy and myself with my Mum. Not much money around but happy times. Sad the way families split up now due to employment, economics etc.

Comments & Feedback

Hi Ann, long, long time no see! I do hope that you are still with us. That beautiful long blonde hair has probably turned a different colour by now. I used to work at the greengrocers opposite the top of your street on Saturdays. Your sister Topsy I remember well, we used to be boyfriend/ girlfriend, I do remember going for a long bike ride with her one Sunday and when we returned Topsy was hungry and asked your Mum for food, I then got spoken to by your parents for not buying some lunch, I couldn't as I had no money, I have never forgotten that and have learnt from it. I hope that Topsy is also still around. I won't say much more at this time but hope to hear back from you or Topsy. Bye for now, Regards, Tony Day
