Nostalgic memories of West Molesey's local history

Share your own memories of West Molesey and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

We moved in to our new house in Rosemary Avenue in 1938. We had a Triumph car and my father built a garage of timber and asbestos sheets and laid concrete runways for it (they're still there). I started school in 1939 at the infant school in Down Street. One of our neighbours had a daughter Shirley, the same age as me and we went to school together. When the Blitz first started in 1940 we couldn't get ...see more
My father was a Constable in the Metropolitan Police and in 1937 he transferred from central London to East Molesey. He bought a house in Rosemary Avenue but we had to move to Molesey before it was ready, so we rented a house in Island Farm Road. The first morning my mother woke up and saw a bed bug on the sheet. My father got on his bicycle, rushed to the telephone box and phoned the council. He got home ...see more

I remember the river mole had broke it banks and a lot of molesey had been flooded . We went with my dad to see how bad it was . We lived in molesham way and it hadn't reached us then. We went to bed that evening ,and remember waking up to water in my bedroom. We lived in the flats so had to try and get all our furniture upstairs. We stayed upstairs with neighbours . Bag of chips was 9d I believe, we used to buy a bag on the way back from cubs at the Scout Hut, St Peters Road. There was also a Post Office on the High Street, along from the main shops. Also the range of shops in Island Farm Road - sweet and paper shop, bakers, greengrocers, truck café, another one then the Post Office, I believe. There was a factory in Molesey Avenue which made "superballs", which bounced ...see more
David Temple was born and raised in Walton Road, and then moved to 7 Adecroft Way in 1957. I had a brother Tony, and a sister Jacky, who has now passed away. My grandmother is buried in St Peters church and remember Rev Y.... very well as he used to spend more time in the pub next door than conducting church service. Whenever I can I visit Molesey and just breath the nostalgic memories, they were the best days in my life and I still consider it home.
I was born at the Bearstead Memorial Hospital in 1946 and lived on Hurstfield Road for my first 5 years, then moved to Weston Avenue. That house backed on to Hurst Park racecourse and I used to love to look over the fence to see all the jockeys pretty colours, and would say hello to Gordon Richards and Lester Piggott as they came out of the loo, which was just behind our fence! The racecourse ran over the road ...see more
