The Pumping Station On West Thurrock Marshes
A Memory of West Thurrock.
My father Stan Wilson grew up in a cottage on the marshes at West Thurrock where his father was the resident engineer for the adjacent Pumping Station (Sewage?).
The 1939 census shows the family comprised Robert Wilson and his wife Rosa Wilson (nee Crates) and 4 children Bob, Rose, Stan (my father) and Andrew. Shortly after the war the family left the cottage.
It was still standing (unoccupied I think) in 1953 when the Great Flood struck and caused severe damage.
The cottage is sadly long gone now and was demolished during construction of the QE2 bridge. The approach road now passes directly over the site.
Dad (Stan Wilson) worked as a pipefitter for Silley Weir at Tilbury Graving Dock during the war up until about 1953. If anyone has any memories of him or Tilbury Dry Dock particularly photos I would love to hear from you.
My last contact with Dad's family was with my cousin Marie Strong (daughter of Arthur and Rose Strong nee Wilson). My cousin Diane (Marie's younger sister) married (Dennis Rolfe) and went to live in South Africa.
I am compiling a family history cum local history for my children and grandchildren so if you can remember my father's family home or have a family connection with either the Wilsons or the Crates families from Grays and Thurrock please get in touch. I would love to hear from you.
