Happy Days
A Memory of West Wickham.
I lived in West Wickham from when I was born in 1956 until 1968. Remember the place very well. I went to Hawes Down school where Miss Washington was the headmistress. Always used to go to Kiddilines the toy shop at the bottom of the High Street and Hobbytime near the railways station. All my pocket money went on Airfix kits!
My mum always shopped at Bests the butchers and the Pay and take. We used to go the "The Pickhurst" for lunch sometimes. As a catholic the threepenny bit church was a Sunday morning haunt. Father Callan was the priest who ruled everyone with a rod of iron in those days. Friends of my parents owned Millbanks the gentleman's outfitters opposite the post office. I remember the swimming pool being built on an old bit of waste ground opposite the station.
I would like to go back and visit the old place but not sure I would recognise much!
