Duncan Down, Whitstable

A Memory of Whitstable.

My Auntie Peggy was born in Gillingham in 1922 and her younger sister (my mum) in 1925. I have a tiny photo of Peggy, Mum and their friend Moira sitting at the top of a grassy hill on tin trays, ready to slide down the slope. This would have been around 1930.

Mum died a few years ago so I just have my memories of what she told me about the photo. She said that the place was called "Dunstable Downs" and they travelled there by bus from Gillingham. Now, I can't imagine that the family travelled all the way to Dunstable Downs in Bedfordshire by bus, but Duncan Down in Whitstable sounds a more likely destination for a day-trip. Perhaps she got the names 'Duncan' and 'Whitstable' muddled up to make 'Dunstable', or perhaps her Dad muddled the names up for fun?

Having compared present-day photos of Duncan Down with Mum's little photo I think it is quite possible that they are the same place.

Does anyone else remember having fun sliding down the hill there?
