Quarry Cottages Wideopen Weetslade

A Memory of Wideopen.

My great-great-grandparents came over from Ireland in the potato famine in 1840, and they lived at Quarry Cottages in Wideopen-Weetslade. My great-great-grandfather was a stone-quarryman in Wideopen.

My grandfather, John Tweddle (1877-1924) was the foreman manager of Wideopen Quarry from 1914-1924. He was entitled to live in the big house that formed a part of the Quarry Row Cottages. My father was born there in 1916. My uncle, Matthew Lee Tweddle (1900-1990) was a monumental sculptor and had a business advertised at the quarry onto the Great North Road and opposite North Terrace (now Park View) where my grandfather bought a house in 1920.
