Widnes, The Transporter Bridge c.1955

More about this scene
Notice the chimney on the left doing its best to improve the air quality of Widnes. In fact the air quality here was so atrocious there was great concern about its affect on the bridge's iron frame. To counteract this all the cables used in the structure were coated with bitumen and then wrapped in sail-cloth which had itself also been saturated in bitumen.
