More about this scene

From the modern, bustling entertainment of Drusilla's Zoo Park we finish this chapter in Wilmington, on the east side of the Cuckmere River. This very pretty village with its flint and brick houses and cottages runs south from the main road to its parish church of St Mary and St Peter, which is set high above the lane with the ruins of Wilmington Priory beyond. The chancel is Norman. To the north of the north porch there is a massive, very ancient yew tree, its weary boughs propped on posts. It is thought to be as old as the Norman church itself.
