A Child's View.

A Memory of Woldingham.

I moved to Woldingham with my Mother (she worked for Sir James and Lady Marshall at Whistlers Wood) when I was five years old (1951). I remember my Mother ordering food from Saffins and this I believe was delivered. Also remember being able to buy a penny worth of broken biscuits from another shop in the village - this seemed such a treat at the time!

I attended Woldingham Primary School and remember the big fireplace in our classroom and bottles of milk that appeared almost frozen in the Winter. Miss Bryce was the Headmistress at the time and she really scared me - I believe she lived on or near the Green. In 1953 I remember we had our own Coronation on the Green. I remember too a family with children named Leonard, Mary and Margaret May and on my marriage I became Mary May. I have very happy memories of Woldingham,. the church and the school. Sir James used to take me to school on Wednesdays and being a very little girl I was terrified I would not be able to get easily our of his big car.

Winters were such fun too my bicycle standing up in the snow where it was so deep. Also when I went to School in Caterham many times in Winter the bus could not get up Woldingham hill - extra days off what a treat!

We left Woldingham in about 1960 moving to Wendover in Buckinghamshire. I now live in Wigan Greater Manchester in a canal side cottage at WN1 3DT. I was Mary Stanton and am now Mary Kellam
