Slades Yard

A Memory of Wooburn Green.

In the 70's I knew Herbert Slade as a member of the Woburn Green Methodist Church. His family owned the scrapyard . His father had been the village blacksmith working at the rear of the Red Lion Pub. When the pub was refurbished, I took pictures of the forge that they had walked away from leaving almost everything. The entry door could be seen , solidly closed, in the side wall of the pub for a very long time.

I am the Great Granddaughter of George Baker who owned the yard before Frederick Herbert Slade. He was known as the "Grand Old Man " of Wooburn Green, was president of Wooburn Working Men's Club and Wooburn Athletic Football Club and vice president of Wooburn Park Cricket Club. He had carried on business as a coal and scrap metal merchant and farrier in the village. He had been a generous supporter of many chariatable movements in Wooburn Green and Bourne End. He lived in Arch House and died in 1947. Does anyone remember him?
Hello there. I am looking for information on the Red Lion pub in Wooburn Green, I think my Great Grandfather Henry Clarke and his wife Fanny ran the pub for a few years. Henry was also a Butcher and I think part of the pub may have been given over to this occupation.
The reason I have commented here is because you mention the pub in your comment.
I would really like to know abit more about the Clarke's and their time in Wooburn Green, and i'm hoping as they ran a pub there my be some evidence remaining of them being there.
Hi, I am David Slade and my grandparents, Fredrick Henry Slade, lived in Arch House, 39, The Green, Wooburn Green. He had been the manager to George Baker and I remember his living in the house, when I was a child.
It would be good good to hear from you if interested?
David Slade
