Wood Green In The War Years

A Memory of Wood Green.

Does anyone remember the fire station on Bounds Green RD ?? well that is where I lived from 1939 to 1948..#8 Firemens Flats. My father was a fireman and drove a huge Leyland Merriweather shining brass engine... There were about a dozen other families with children and my sister and I were the only girls...some of the firemen used to call us the two little princess's. Even though there was a war on, they were happy years ,we used to have allotments to grow veggies and such, there were chicken runs and rabbit hutches as each family tried to augment the poor rations. as such we did very well. I used to love walking down the old station path on my way to St Pauls Catholic school with a couple of friend Anne Meyers and Margaret McVady....I wonder what happened to them. We used to go to Alexandra Palace on weekends and if we were really lucky we might get a Walls ice cream or some potato crisps.. My brother was born on the firestation in 1946 ,the first child ever born there.. We used to walk down Jolly Butchers hill to the sweet shop and spend our pennies and rations on sweeties..I used to go down Trinity rd to the green grocer, and other shops which probably aren't there anymore, I remember Wells bakery where we would go for buns and bread fresh from the oven. In 1948 we emigrated to Canada and I have never been back to Wood Green, many years ago my parents took my brother to see where he was born...unfortunately it was no longer a firestation,but an ambulance base.... the allotments are gone and there is a street where they used to be, but, the railway lines still run back there. My brother used to love to sit on the embankment and watch the trains go buy..Fond memories of an old lady.
