More about this scene

Ulverston's most famous landmark is the John Barrow monument. Locally named the Pepperpot, it was erected in 1850 on Hoad Hill to commemorate Ulverston-born Sir John Barrow, a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society. Local collectors found themselves £100 short to complete the construction, so they turned to Trinity House, who donated the money on the understanding that the monument could be used as working lighthouse if the need ever arose. The monument is a replica of the famous Eddystone lighthouse near Plymouth. Sir John is famous as an important figure in British naval history - he was given the task of writing the definitive report on the mutiny of the 'Bounty' in 1831. He is also remembered as an intrepid explorer: Barrow Point in northern Alaska and Barrow Strait in Canada are named after him. The monument has 112 steps to the top of the tower, where spectacular views of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District can be enjoyed from the lantern room.

We could squeeze through a gap in the railings and played from morning to sunset when 'Parky' came to lock up swinging ...see more

My memory relates to the Gas Lamp which formerly stood in the centre of County Square in Ulverston. It was erected in front of the County Hotel which stood on what is now the site of the Coronation Hall.I understand that the Council first sought approval of the Manager of the Hotel as to the design of the Gas Lamp.Additionally I was told that the Lantern at the top of the Lamp originally came from Picadilly in ...see more
The thin half of the world's greatest movie comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy, was born in Foundry Cottages, Ulverston, now Argyle St., in 1890. He was born and lived in his grandparents' home until the age of 6. His grandfather, George Metcalfe, ran the shoemender's shop in Newlands Bottom, which fascinated the little boy. Christened Arthur Stanley Jefferson, Stan spent a lot of his Ulverston boyhood around the ...see more
