Nostalgic memories of Greenford's local history

Share your own memories of Greenford and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in Perivale Maternity Hospital in 1943. Like so many of your writers growing up then was a magical time; the freedom we had to wander the fields, play and fish in the canal (in homemade boats that always sank, and with rods that always broke), can no longer be enjoyed by any children. I lived in Wadham Gardens, went to school in Wood End Infants and Junior boys, then to finish ...see more
I also lived at Gurnell Grove from around 1950 to 1961. Have very happy memories about living there. I had a little dog called Trixie who was always with me. Still in touch with some of the people I knew, such as Bobby & Micky Frost and Eddie Browne. We used to play in the six fields as they were then known, have a fire and roast spuds in it and play tin tan tommy. They were happy days, you could go out or ...see more
QPR practicing in Birkbeck playing fields, 1st Greenford scout hut behind Greenford station, Costains, Stanhope then Brentside, many a happy weekend working at Bennetts model shop opposite Greenford hall, the 92 or 120 bus home from school. Hello - I work for the BBC 'Songs of Praise' programme and I am currently researching an edition of the programme to be filmed in Greenford, to be broadcast in December 2012. The theme of our programme is 'Wartime Christmas'. I am looking for people from the Greenford area who have memories of Christmas during World War 2. I'd like to ask about your memories of Christmas ...see more
We moved to 1 Greenford Gardens in 1936 from Northolt; it was a great place to grow up. Spent most of the time in Ravenor Park playing football/cricket, went to Bethams then Costons Junior with Mr Blount the Headmaster who lived in a large house in Oldfield Lane, right next to the school. Next was Stanhope Senior where a Mr Robinson (rubber neck) was Head. Saw the devastation when a German plane let his ...see more
Born at 14 Greenford Gardens, my late parents Dr & Mrs Erskine founded Greenford Surgery at 297 Greenford Road. Earliest memories were of chilblains, no proper heating at home, and the door bell always ringing day and night, my father had open house for his patients 7 days a week. Bethams and Costons were wonderful schools, warm, strict and encouraging. Memories of visiting ...see more
I was born in Runnymede Gardens, near the Bridge Hotel and Greenford roundabout in 1939. I remember Spitfires flying from Northolt and a V1 rocket that (I think) hit part of Glaxo laboratories in 1944. I was in the garden, aged 5, when that flew over. VE night was also memorable, as was the subsequent street party in the back alley behind Runnymede Gardens. I can recall a bonfire with an effigy of Hitler in ...see more
Used to go and play in the streams and the River Brent, the memories are so vivid. Tis, was, of course during the war. I and a friend, took my three and a half year years younger sister with us, I would have been six years and a bit. We paddled and played ,and crossed the stepping stones and my friend Mary piggybacked my sister, and Trix (my sister) fell in and ...see more
I remember Greenford so well. I was born in Ealing in 1943, and moved to a prefab at Invicta Grove in Northolt in about 1950. Greenford was just a bus journey away from home, and a walk on a sunny day. I remember the Expresso coffee shop just round the corner from Woolworth's. I used to go in there every month to get my 'top of the pops' album. I also worked at Greenford Glassworks, as a windscreen ...see more
I remember Girl Guides with my friend Wendy Hobson at the Holy Cross Churches and Evensong at 6:30PM on Sundays. Yes Wendy, I remember after the 9AM mass we would go over to Bethem hall after service to set up for Parish Breakfast. Also, my mother would take us up to Greenford Broadway to buy some sweets, and she would buy some lovely smelling bread. I, and my two sister, Joan and Ann would walk ...see more
