Nostalgic memories of Greenford's local history

Share your own memories of Greenford and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I lived @ 34 Gurnell Grove from 1947 to approx.1955. I remember the names of everyone up my alley, and others in the Grove. I had eight wonderful years there, the freedom to go wherever you liked, over the six fields, which took you all the way via Jacobs ladder to West Ealing. There was a riding school just off the first field, there were plenty of parks, tennis courts, golf courses, the River Brent, loads of ...see more
I spent the first 19 years of my life living in Hill Rise by Greenford station. As others have said it was a much freer time for kids, from an early age we were let out to roam far and wide fishing and swimming. Yes, swimming in the Cut by Rockware Glass. The 93 bus up to Greenford was a real adventure, school days at Oldfield Infants then Coston Junior Boys and finally at Brentside SM. People say the ...see more
My mum, Margaret Lane, worked at Red Lion Pub lunchtime shifts cooking in the kitchen and would take me and my younger brother Martin there with her during school holidays. I remember the dumb waiter going up and down from the kitchen to the bar with cooked food, not entirely sure of the year, but this was one of my early memories so I was probably about 5 or 6 and remember being spoilt by the landlords.
I grew up on the Lady Margaret Rd off Ruislip Rd near Greenford, back in the 1940's, and attended Dormers Wells School. Memories of the Granada Theatre are still really real to me to this day; Saturday mornings watching Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Laurel and Hardy was so much fun. Eating 'Walls ice cream" with all my friends, was a big highlight, and took the horror of war away while we were in the Granada. ...see more
I was born in Perivale Maternity Hospital in 1947 and lived in Long Drive until 1975...those were the days. Wonderful memories of: first school - Oldfield infants then on to Coston's Junior Girls School. My mum worked at J Lyons for years and walked to Greenford Station, then in the opposite direction to the trains was a tunnel that led to Lyons - I later worked there in the ...see more
We moved to Greenford from Wales when I was 9 in 1956. After moving away in the early 70's I am now back living in Greenford for the past 20 years. Saddest thing of all for me is that the Red Lion was demolished last year. They are now in the processs of building new homes - Greenford will never be the same again.
I was also born at Perivale Maternity but in 1942. We lived for many years in Oldfield Lane three doors away from the Station which I remember the P.O.Ws working on. I finished my school years at Costons Sec. Living and growing up in Greenford was a wonderful life for a child, we seemed to have a freedom children in this age do not have maybe it was because we did not have much. I ...see more
I was actually born in 75 Gurnell Grove, in the front room. I went to Cuckoo Hill Infants School and also I think the junior school. I remember going to Saturday morning 'pictures' and I also think there was another movie house in Greenford. I remember Greenford market and thinking it so cool to buy some of the clothes that I did. I also saw The Who at some pub in Greenford (?) And the Rolling Stones in Ealing. ...see more
I was born in 1958 in the Perivale Maternity hospital off the Western Avenue. I lived for my first few years in Goring Way and then Queens Avenue until leaving the area in 1973. Memories etched on my mind: Northolt aerodrome, my father was an avid plane enthusiast. The 92 bus running between Southall and Wembley in the days of the old RT doubledeckers. Bennetts model shop in Ruislip Road - ...see more
I started life in Kings Avenue Greenford, went through my schooling at; Bethams, Stanhope Junior then Stanhope senior boys. I remember spending 6d of chips at the fish and chip shop on Greenford Road almost opposite the Red Lion. Always spent Saturday mornings at the Granada cinema, the organ and the prizes if you had a piece of string or a pencil or whatever. The Bunny Park was a favourite ...see more
