Lower Street is the part of the square of Merriott's main streets nearest the Parrett. It has many old Ham stone cottages, some thatched, and some with stone mullioned windows.
It is hard to imagine a town with a population of 2,000 being short-listed for the Welsh capital when it consists essentially of two intersecting streets.
Fleet Street had been 'the street of ink' ever since Caxton's assistant Wynkyn de Worde set up his press next to St Bride's Church in 1500.

This wonderful atmospheric view looks through Stonebow into the continuation of High Street which follows the line of the Roman road to London, later known as Ermine Street.
