Walmer, The Village c.1955

More about this scene
These solid stone cottages, and the George Inn on the left, exhibit the robust and simple style which is common to most British fishing ports. Certainly the men of Walmer, who have manned the lifeboat stationed here since 1856, have good cause to regard the sea and weather with caution. They have left the security of these snug buildings in treacherous conditions to save more than eighteen hundred souls whose vessels have come to grief on the nearby Goodwin Sands over the intervening years.
