Enormous Nostalgia

A Memory of Wath Upon Dearne.

I lived in Wath until I enlisted in the RAF at the age of 19. The photographs of Wath on Dearne create a sense of enormous nostalgia and I vividly recall my childhood and teenage years. I attended the Grammar School 1947/52 and reflect upon the teachers, for whom I had great respect, and my fellow school students.
Despite the two collieries and the second largest railway marshalling yard in the UK, there were many features of outstanding attraction and interest; the well cultivated ‘roundabout’, the ‘buzzing’ Saturday shopping scene, bluebell picking in Wath Wood, playing on the racecourse but to mention a few. Indeed, it would be easy to write several chapters about the memories evoked by the photographs. I am now living in Wetherby with my wife (nee Pauline Theaker) a Brampton girl whom I met whilst she was working at Wath Co-op.
