Grammar School And All That!
A Memory of Wath Upon Dearne.
I remember the Grammar School well - I got transferred from Mexborough Tech because I had failed my 11+ Then I actually got to TEACH at the Grammar School whena student when the music teacher was ill for a time. My dad owned the shop at the top of West Street [Ladlow's greengrocers] and Waddington's was just oppposite which I could see from my bedroom window. I eventually became a headteacher in Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, Hampshire and Humberside so I must have been doing SOMETHING RIGHT! I remember filming on 16mm film the new HALL which opened that year - wow - William Hague actually sang hymns in there too!!! What a change it is today in 2010. I fondly remember the old Majestic cinema, just a stone's throw from my house, and I loved going there - I remembered the closing date when "Kings Rhapsody" was the last film [it was due to re-open after "cleaning" but it was losing money hand over fist so it never re-opened].
