This is the River Torridge, viewed rfom the Bideford to Torrington road. Trees have grown, and it is not possible to see this view now. The railway ran to Great Torrington when this view was taken; it later extended to Halwill Junction and the North Cornwall branch lines. This particular section lasted until the 1980s, and is now part of the Tarka Trail, a walk and cycle-way.

My happiest memories of childhood are the weeks spent with my aunt who lived in Weare Giffard. Coming from London I felt I had arrived in paradise. My aunt, lived in a bungalow called 'Wayside' near the Halfpenny bridge. From her garden, we used to watch the otters playing on the riverbank.
