More about this scene
Wells Cathedral was begun in the 1180s and finished in the 1230s; its glory is its magnificent west front, surely the finest in the country, which has over 400 carved figures in its niches. Above are the grand 14th-century west towers, and beyond soars the great central tower, 'outstanding even in Somerset, a county famed for the splendour of its church towers' (Alec Clifton-Taylor).
