Wells, Market Place 1890

More about this scene
Little has changed here: the cannon has gone, and the buildings between the gatehouses now have dormers. The 1793 fountain remains, while the Georgian bay windows to the range beyond conceal Bishop Bekynton's mid 15th-century Nova Opera, a range of houses over workshops and shops built along the north side of the market place. Their fine timber roofs remain, and in this view you can see two of the medieval stepped buttresses. Beyond 'Davy's' are the gables and oriels of the 15th-century Crown Hotel.
