Pitts Cottage

A Memory of Westerham.

My nan Eliza Geal or Jelly as she was known, worked at Pitts Cottage doing the cooking in the 50-60s she lived at Park Cottages just down the road and her husband Sunny worked on the Squerrys Estate which was run by a Major Warde, his son John took over and I remember Nan and Sunny doffing their hat's and half bowing when they went by. I lived in Moorhouse just over the border and my parents ran the youth club in St Marys hall for several years in the early 60s. I had an aunt and uncle whoe lived in Madan Road then moved to the new flats. Another aunt and uncle lived at the farm up Goodlystock Road - he worked in Fred Woods the grocer near the forge, his wife I think, may have worked at Farleycroft - she was a Barnardo`s girl. I went to school on Limpsfield Common the Oxted. I worked in the Standard with Mr and Mrs Champion. I bottled up in the afternoons before opening also had a paper round - I had to cycle to the paper shop opposite Hookers the printers then out to Moorhouse to deliver them. I served a 6 year apprenticeship at Westerham Press.
