A Selection of Memories from Whatstandwell

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Whatstandwell

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Every year dad would take me and my 4 sisters and 3 brothers to merebrook caravan park for the whole duration of the 6 week summer holidays. We absolutely loved it. We made loads of friends down there. Can anyone remember us. Wally and Chris (mum and dad) Annette julie mandy Dianne Ingrid (me and my sisters) Martin geoff Keith (brothers). We travelled in a pale blue Bedford van with cartoon drawings on the back doors. It was our second home. 1970 s we were there.
My parents had a static caravan at Alderwasley. It was here I heard my first owl and as we walked down the cobbler road to the bridge Mum and I would look for the water trough where I was told at night the fairies bathed.the landlady at the Derwent had a fascination for pigs .Pigs of all shapes and sizes adorned the bar.
The caravan park by the river Derwent has now closed, my extended family had a static there and the countryside was beautiful. In the 1960s Romany gypsies would camp in the woods.
A trailer holiday at Whitsun in late April. All I can remember was that the site was alongside the river and I tried to catch tiddlers in a jam jar, heck I was only 3 1/2 but I would like to know where the trailer park was. We lived in Chaddesden.
