More about this scene
The coming of the railway put Whitby firmly on the tourist map; its harbourside streets, ruined abbey, and souvenirs made from jet (a fossilized wood found locally), all proved a magnet for holidaymakers. The holiday trade led to much of the development seen in the town. This area was a favourite place where people could stop for a chat, or simply sit and watch the world go by.
