More about this scene
It was not until the early 18th century that the benefits of the large-scale drainage schemes of the previous century began to be felt. The subsequent prosperity of the district is praised in the Wisbech entry in the Universal British Directory of Trade and Commerce of the 1790s; this stated that the area had 'been in a most flourishing and productive state, the fields seem to laugh and sing with their superabundant produce'.
