More about this scene

Woodford Halse grew from a small ironstone village in the later 19th century, partly through ironstone working but mostly when the Great Central Railway arrived in 1899. As a result there are numerous terraces of workers' cottages, all in brick and mainly attached to the west side of the village. This view looks along one of the best streets in Woodford Halse with mainly stone houses and the dominating Moravian Church of 1906.

I Lived There As A Child
My parents managed The White Hart pub when I was about 9 years old (I'm now 60) and I went to the village school. I have fond memories of the village and remember getting the train to Banbury with my Mum to go shopping.

A Short But Happy Time

Although I only lived in Woodford for a couple of years at most I was happy there. We lived at 17 High St, which I suppose might be called a cottage these days. It was a 2 up 2 down place with a strange sort of tiny extension built on the back which my mother called the kitchenette! There was a brick built coal store and toilet across the yard, no bathroom! Fishing For Tiddlers As A Small Boy In A Stream In Woodford
I remember as if it was yesterday, walking from 7 Manor Road, the house I was born in. My grandad and granma, the Peasnells, lived there for some time. I used to walk with my cousin John, he was a few years older than me, down the road to stone bridge, just before the tunnel, which lead to platforms up the wide stone steps which have now been bricked up. The Gorse Br Staff Association Club
My mother and father (Charles and Lilian) ran the Club from 1954-1957 approx. We lived in just one part with a large living room, a kitchen which led to the back area of stables and grass and 4 bedrooms. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
