More about this scene

Seen here from the Swithland Road, the church, which is faced in slate from the local quarries, was designed in 1836 by William Railton (1801- 77), a Gothic Revivalist and architect to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. His finest work in Leicestershire was Beaumanor Park (1845), but his best known work is Nelson's Column. St Paul's was enlarged in 1870 and 1880, and the tower was rebuilt in 1904. In the foreground is the village's tribute to the fallen of two World Wars, admirably achieved with sensitivity and intimacy.

We Called It 'charnwood Forest'.
My memories of the home are all very positive. I would have been 6 yrs old, and recovering from pneumonia. Coming from the Children's Hospital in Derby, the drive over was memorable. A big black car, very special. There was an 'aeroplane' motif, like a hood ornament on the gate as we drove in and down the drive. Children's Convalescent Home Charnwood Forest 1949
I was three years old when I went to Charnwood Forest for four weeks to convalesce in late spring 1949. I was recovering from pleurisy and pneumonia. My parents didn't have a car so I was collected from home in Birmingham in a black 'London' taxi. Charnwood
I was here in 1957 recovering from pneumonia. I was sent through the motor panels where my dad worked. I was seriously home sick as my dad didn't have a car so I only saw them once the whole time I was there.wendy benn

Woodhouse Eves
My name is Jacqueline Billingsley. I was sent here in the 1950's from hospital due to kidney problems. I remember the Matron who would take her small dog for walks every morning in the woods. Being very fond of dogs even at a young age but the Matron would never let any of us pet or even play with her dog. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
