My mum (Gloria Hawkins) was born in Yeovil in 1942 in an upstairs bedroom of 99 Westfield Grove. She left in 1960 to work at a holiday camp where she met my dad who was from London. They married and settled in West London where they went on to have 4 children. During the school holidays my mum would pack me and my younger sister off to stay at my nan and grandads... My mother & I were rushed into the cellar of the 'George Hotel' which was opposite Woolworths which took a direct hit. We came out afterwards and I was rushed home from what seemed quite an adventure for me, but it was 35+- years after that I had a sudden flashback and realized how lucky we were, as several people were killed that day. I was born on Yeovil in 1945, and my memories are of growing up in a pleasant market town. The George was a wonderful timber framed building that I remember being demolished because, apparently, it hindered traffic flow. Shortly after it was knocked down the whole area was pedestrianised ! Such a short-sighted attitude from the Planners is staggering!
