Nostalgic memories of Aveley's local history

Share your own memories of Aveley and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I lived in the High Street (122) from 1946 until 1981. I went to the Infants and Junior schools and graduated to 'Bushey Bit' which basically means I failed the 11 plus. I have so many fond memories of the village 'beauty' spots: Reidy Pond, The Tunnel Pit, The Flat Pit & The Dog's Grave to mention just a few. Most of all I remember playing football during the school holidays on the Tunnel field. ...see more
I remember Father McNeice, Father Randall and Father Preston as vicars at St Michael's church in Aveley. My Mother Mary Archer was the church clerk at St Michael's for many years from the 50s. She also did some cleaning there, was a member of the Mothers Union and ushered at weddings and funerals so I spent much of my early childhood in the church and it's grounds. I used to love spending time with Mrs Plumridge ...see more
Hi Freddie, I don't know if you will remember me Angela Beeny. I lived in Dacre Road and then Hall Road and had a younger sister called Susan. I was friends with Janice Smith, Joyce Willaim and Audrey Allen, Tony Chapman, Ray Flannigan, Barry Pegram and Harry Raymond. I can't remember you going up to Bushy Bit with us though, perhaps you moved away. From what I remember of you was that of a boy full ...see more

A Memory of Aveley Hello. I also stumbled across this site by accident and was blown away by all the memories shared by Colin Newberry on Mar 25th 2014. I can relate to many other memories shared but Colin's are so close, my memories flooded back. I moved to Aveley with my Mum and Dad -JOYCE and DEREK WILTCHER c.1952 from Grays town center, where we lived in a flat above Sydney Greys store (Radios TV's ...see more
I lived in one of the cottages directly opposite these shops in the 50's. No 33 Kennington Cottages. My youngest brother and sister were born here. I have so many fond memories. I seem to remember the drapers shop had a lovely dog. I used to buy warm peanuts on occasion in the sweet shop. They were warmed by a funny little glass cabinet with a light bulb inside. The sandpits nearby were just being dug out. They have been filled in now. That really does make me feel old.

I lived in A prefab in Tamerisk Road, and travelled to Dagenham County High School each school day. Steam train to Upminster, District line to Heathway, 148 bus to outside the school. Before got going to school I did a 'big' paper round. Orchard Road, Orchard Close and West (?) Road. I think it was the biggest round on Mrs Hall's books. I remember with gratitude the tips I used to receive each Saturday ...see more
I have fond memories of growing up in Aveley. We first lived in the pre-fabs in Dacre Cr. or Ave. when I was about 5. I vividly remember my first day at the infants school. Marching into the hall to the 'soldiers tune' played on the piano by Mrs. Ward (I think). Getting the slipper from the headmistress (Mrs. Branch or Blanch) at 5 or 6 years old for running up the school drive towards the High St. Playing in ...see more
